Choose a region
The west coast is not one place.
Clare, Galway, Achill and Kerry all look close on a small map. They are different trips. Start with the base, days and transport you actually have.
The planning rule
Pick the stretch before the stops.
For a first week, I would normally choose one western stretch: Galway and Clare, Mayo and Achill, or Kerry and Dingle. Combining all three is possible; enjoying all three in a short trip is the doubtful bit.

Choose by the trip you want.
A rough route fit
Which region belongs in which trip?
| Region | Useful base | Time that feels worthwhile | Transport fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galway + Clare | Galway or Doolin | 3–4 nights | Works with tours; a car adds flexibility |
| Mayo + Achill | Westport or Achill | 2–3 nights after Galway | Best with a car |
| Kerry + Dingle | Killarney, Kenmare or Dingle | 3–5 nights | Car or organised day tours |
| Inis Oírr | Galway or Doolin | One full weather-flexible day | Ferry and transfer planning |
Choose the wider route
Decide how many days you have before choosing a coast.
A five-day trip and a ten-day trip should not be smaller and larger versions of the same map.
