Choose a region

The west coast is not one place.

Clare, Galway, Achill and Kerry all look close on a small map. They are different trips. Start with the base, days and transport you actually have.

Cliffs and Atlantic water on Ireland’s west coast

The planning rule

Pick the stretch before the stops.

For a first week, I would normally choose one western stretch: Galway and Clare, Mayo and Achill, or Kerry and Dingle. Combining all three is possible; enjoying all three in a short trip is the doubtful bit.

Choose by the trip you want.

A rough route fit

Which region belongs in which trip?

Region choices by useful base, time and transport

Mayo + AchillWestport or Achill2–3 nights after GalwayBest with a car

Choose the wider route

Decide how many days you have before choosing a coast.

A five-day trip and a ten-day trip should not be smaller and larger versions of the same map.
